What We Do is provide humanitarian assistance to the people of the country of Georgia. Since our inception we have provided scholarships to at-risk children in Georgia to attend trade or vocational schools, and University if they qualify, to allow them to bridge the gap between leaving an orphanage at 16 and living a productive life as an adult. Since the Russian invasion of 2008 we have partnered with the Atlanta-Tbilisi Sister Cities Committee and expanded this mission to provide whatever humanitarian relief we can, mostly through existing relief organizations and non-governmental organizations in Georgia. We do it by recruiting sponsors who will commit to sponsorship of an individual scholarship student, and by soliciting unrestricted donations which can be used for humanitarian relief.
Georgia to Georgia, Inc., grew out of the realization by some members of a Marietta, Georgia, church humanitarian mission team that when orphans in Georgia reach the age of 16 they must leave the orphanage, and find a place in Georgian society, which they are ill-equipped to do. With unemployment running at around 30%, there is little chance of them finding a job without further training or education. The situation is particularly dire for young women, who may find predators waiting to sell them into prostitution as soon as they are away from the cloistered environment of the orphanage.
There exists in Georgia a reasonably well-developed system of trade schools or "collages", usually supported by regional governments that are roughly equivalent to our state governments. The initial group of Marietta mission volunteers put together an effort to raise money to send some of these children on to college. From this action came the realization that by sponsoring these children through two or three years of vocational training, we could equip them with the skills to become independent, and develop the maturity to survive in an adult world.
In May of 2006, in order to better coordinate fund raising, and with the realization that businesses do not donate to faith-based organizations, Georgia to Georgia, Inc. was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) public charity, to accomplish humanitarian assistance to Georgia. In September, 2008, Georgia to Georgia merged it's efforts with the Atlanta-Tbilisi Sister Cities Committee to become an umbrella organization to manage the funds collected by ATSSC and others, and to direct those funds to worthwhile efforts in Georgia. Directors and officers are listed here.
According to its charter Georgia to Georgia, Inc. may perform a wide range of humanitarian deeds. In the past, we primarily focused on supporting young people coming out of he orphanages by enrolling them in school, and providing up to three years of education or training. Support for the students consists of paying their tuition and any fees for equipment, and providing the student with a small stipend sufficient to rent a shared flat and buy groceries. Since the invasion by Russia summer of 2008 we have dramatically increased our direct humanitarian aid to displaced persons, as well as continuing the scholarship program.
